In today's fragmented media landscape, brands are under constant pressure to create connected campaigns that deliver consistency across channels. Yet many still plan social and digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) separately.
That may be a missed opportunity.
Some of the most valuable DOOH creative assets are often already sitting in a brand's social content calendar, ready to work harder and reach further.
Social and DOOH share a natural synergy. Consumers increasingly move between digital and physical environments throughout the day, often engaging with social content while travelling, shopping or spending time outdoors. However, despite the increase in behaviour, social media ads see an 11% drop in attention during the day, when audiences are out of home. This creates a powerful opportunity for brands to combine the visibility and credibility of the real world, alongside social to help boost engagement.
Having started my career in social strategy and now working in OOH planning, I've always been struck by how differently these channels are treated. We may plan them separately, but consumers experience them as part of one connected journey.
Could malls be the perfect environment for social content?
Many brands use social to reach younger audiences, especially 18-34-year-olds, who can be difficult to engage through traditional channels. The same audience is also highly present in malls.
Today's malls are far more than retail destinations. They are social and entertainment hubs where people meet friends, dine, watch films and enjoy leisure experiences. Research shows that 62% of Gen Z and Millennials have visited a mall in the past four weeks, making them a highly effective environment for reaching these audiences.
The link becomes even stronger when we consider how younger consumers engage with advertising. They increasingly favour content-led experiences over traditional ads, responding best to creative that feels authentic, entertaining and native to their everyday media consumption. Social content is built with this mindset which makes it naturally suited to the mall environment, where audiences are relaxed, engaged and open to discovery.
Turning existing social assets into high-attention creative
There's another advantage: the creative work is already done.
Short-form video, Reels and TikTok-style content translate seamlessly onto full-motion DOOH screens. Brands can extend the lifespan and reach of existing social assets without the time and cost of producing entirely new creative.
Instead of building separate campaigns, marketers can amplify social content in a high-attention, real-world setting, while maintaining consistency across channels.
New research highlights strong audience acceptance
To understand how social-style creative performs in malls, Bauer Media Outdoor partnered with Toluna to test organic social content from brands across beauty, personal care, quick-service retail and ice cream categories.
The findings were compelling.
71% of adults said mall DOOH was either the most appropriate environment, or equally as appropriate as social media, for this type of content.
The trend was equally evident among medium and heavy social media users, suggesting that audiences who consume social content most frequently also find it credible and relevant when displayed in a mall environment. Perhaps most importantly, 16-34-year-olds responded more positively than the all-adult sample across every measure tested, including their likelihood to engage further with the brand on social media.
This highlights the unique role mall DOOH plays, as exposure in a physical environment can influence behaviour back online, creating a virtuous cycle between channels, rather than treating them as separate touchpoints.
The takeaway
In a world where social content drives culture and engagement, mall DOOH offers brands a powerful way to extend the reach of assets they already have.
Rather than creating more content, the opportunity is to get more from existing content—amplifying social creative in an environment that captures attention, reinforces brand messaging and reaches audiences where they're already spending their time.
The best DOOH asset on your next campaign might already be sitting in your social feed.
