Project begins to install new bus shelters across North Tyneside

The installation of modern and sustainable bus shelters is underway in North Tyneside, as Clear Channel breaks ground on replacing existing bus shelters at various locations across the borough.   

This upgrade will increase comfort and convenience for passengers whilst supporting the council’s ongoing commitment to reducing carbon emissions.  

The new partnership between Clear Channel and North Tyneside Council will see approximately one-third of bus shelters in the region  renewed at no cost to the council. Clear Channel will install and maintain the renewed shelters as well as manage advertising space for commercial use. A fraction of the revenue generated from shelter advertising will provide guaranteed income to the council. Other bus shelters in the borough continue to be maintained by Nexus on behalf of the council. 

Living Roofs will also be fitted to some of the renewed bus shelters which will enhance biodiversity and contribute to the council’s climate change ambitions. These bus shelters will feature plant-covered roofs, creating a mini habitat for pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and other insects.  

The modern design of these shelters will help to highlight public transport as an appealing option for residents and help encourage people in the borough to choose sustainable travel options.

North Tyneside Council declared a climate emergency in 2019 and has since set out ambitions to work towards being carbon net-zero by 2030 – twenty years ahead of the Government’s target.
